The Scottish Football League 1923 - 1924
Only two seasons after the Second Division was reinstated, a Third Division was created made up of small, provincial teams. Although these little clubs had managed reasonably well in regional competition the burden of much increased travel expenses in a national league, higher match guarantees, minute attendances and increased wages proved too much. Dumbarton Harp resigned for financial reasons in 1924-25. The following season there was a rash of further resignations and the competition collapsed before it could be completed. The members all returned to non-league competition although Forfar Athletic (relegated to the Third Division the previous season) successfully applied to replace Broxburn United, who had finished bottom of the Second Division, to retain their membership of the SFL.
